Venus Weerappuli first started playing cricket within touching distance of the Woolpack Inn, the famous old fictional pub at the heart of ITV’s Yorkshire soap opera, Emmerdale. Now she is making waves in Rovers Return country.
Leg-spinner Weerappuli is a rising star of the women’s game in England, and she has just made her Lancashire senior debut at the age of 16. She has played in Thunder’s last two Vitality Blast matches, against Somerset and Essex, taking three wickets combined in a win and a defeat.
She could very well play against The Blaze at Trent Bridge tomorrow.
Weerappuli is a player who has been ahead of her time for a good few years now, taking wickets in age-group sides above her actual age. You could draw comparisons in that sense to the progression of Haseeb Hameed through the boys’ and men’s set-up a few years ago.
