Derbyshire v Lancashire, Rothesay County Championship, Days 1-3

Ben Aitchison capped a memorable game by taking a five wicket haul as Derbyshire eased to a comprehensive victory over Lancashire on day three of the Rothesay County Championship match at Chesterfield.

Aitchison followed his 75 on day two with 5 for 49 to set up a nine wicket win, Derbyshire's third in Division Two, and condemn Lancashire to a fourth defeat of the season.

The consolation for the Red Rose was an impressive maiden first-class half century for 17-year-old wicketkeeper Joe Moores who hit four sixes in his 57.

It spared his side from an innings defeat but Lancashire could only manage 226 and Derbyshire knocked off the 24 runs inside nine overs for the loss of Harry Came.

Lancashire head coach Steven Croft said

“I thought we were outplayed by Derbyshire. “We underperformed with the bat and ball.

“They stuck in there with the bat. I thought they managed their off-stump well and in that channel. And then their bowlers put us under more pressure than we did with them in the first innings as well with the ball.

“So, yes (it was) very disappointing. Yes, we've got some young lads in the side, but I think more of our team needs to be putting their hands up.

“I think from last week, a similarish pitch, a club wicket. Yes, we got put in and inserted on one that was helpful for the bowlers, but I still thought we could have managed a lot better and almost got closer to them skill-wise as well, which is tough to say. We were really down on our batting and bowling skills.

“It was tricky at times, but we need to find a way to work it out and get better.

“I think we've still got quality players in the squad and obviously some aren't performing. We're underperforming for the group of players we've got.

“We've got injuries, but I think we're still sending sides out there that we expected to do a lot better than they are. Four-day cricket's put to bed for a bit now. Hopefully, we do take the learnings from this phase and the one before because there's been plenty to learn from."

Rothesay County Championship - Day Two, Lancashire 161 and 140-6. Derbyshire 364

Ben Aitchison gave another compelling demonstration of his all-round qualities as Derbyshire advanced towards victory in the Rothesay County Championship Division Two match against Lancashire at Chesterfield.

The fast bowler, who scored his maiden first-class hundred last month against Middlesex, plundered 75 from 74 balls and shared an eighth wicket stand of 125 with Anuj Dal who made 41.

Mitchell Stanley plugged away to take 5 for 80 but Derbyshire’s 364 gave them a lead of 203 and by the close Lancashire were crumbling with Aitchison claiming 3 for 25 to leave them on 140 for 6, still 63 behind.

Seamer Rory Haydon shared the bowling honours with 3 for 38 to leave Lancashire’s fading hopes resting on Marcus Harris who was unbeaten on 57

Lancashire fast bowler Mitchell Stanley said:

"We're not where we want to be, we've been out-performed in most aspects of the game, with the squad we've got we want to be in a better position than we are.

"It's always good to put in a performance but when it's not a performance that puts the team in a winning position it puts a bit of a damper on it.

"I think I bowled well in spells but overall I was a little bit short for this pitch, I felt it should have been much fuller to extract the movement and I think if you look back on our bowling that's probably where we've missed out, a little bit short."

Rothesay County Championship - Day One: Lancashire 161. Derbyshire 197-5.

Lancashire’s batting woes continued when they were bundled out cheaply by Derbyshire on the opening day of the Rothesay County Championship Division Two match at Chesterfield.

After they were routed for 87 by Kent last week, Lancashire subsided to 161 on a challenging pitch with all rounder George Balderson’s 37 the only score of note.

Pakistan Test paceman Muhammad Abbas took 3 for 49, figures matched by Anuj Dal in his first game since he damaged ankle ligaments in April.

Matthew Montgomery then drove home Derbyshire’s advantage with 86 before two late wickets revived Lancashire’s spirits with the hosts closing on 197 for 5, a lead of 36, when bad light ended play.

Lancashire assistant coach Will Porterfield said:

"We know coming to Chesterfield is always going to be a bit tough in the first couple of sessions but we just didn't really build any kind of partnerships.

"We struggled to get any kind of momentum in the innings. It was always going to be difficult, it did a bit in that first hour and a half, the ball nipped around.

"I thought we fought pretty hard with the ball and now we've got to try and make it a one innings game from here."
