He is a fan as well as a coach and he was hurting - Paul Edwards looks back at the Middlesex defeat

A shade under a month ago, in my review of Lancashire’s defeat of Derbyshire I wrote that the losers say it best. Now please consider the edited highlights of Steven Croft’s comments after Lancashire had lost to Middlesex on Monday.

“I'm bitterly disappointed…to be 84 all-out and be 45 for 10 was a disaster, really…we're still not learning from our mistakes with the bat. We're massively down on runs and there's no hiding from it…it was just a bit of disappointment, the no-fight from us.

“It's not an 80-odd all-out pitch. We just didn't find a way to bat on it. We didn't have a method and we didn't stick to it. We have to have a response at Southport, we're too good not to get a positive result.”

In many respects they are the sort of comments you might expect to find “below the line” of an online report. Phrases like “a disaster” and “no fight” might come from a fan who’s had a few.
