On this day four years ago, May 14, 2022, Andrew Symonds was tragically killed in a car crash, aged 46, in his native Queensland. It was one of those pieces of news that stopped you in your tracks, similar with Shane Warne’s passing approximately two months earlier.
When myself and Paul first decided to take on the Lanky Lanky project late last summer, this tribute piece to ‘Roy’, as he was affectionately known worldwide, was one I had in mind to write.
The reason, he is still one of my favourite overseas players that I’ve ever watched, and not just in a Lancashire shirt.
Of course, there are plenty of players who have made a greater impact on Red Rose fortunes over a longer period than Symonds. After all, he was only at Emirates Old Trafford for the second half of 2005. His time was perfectly summed up by the well known phrase, ‘Here for a good time, not a long time’.
