George Balderson has been appointed Lancashire’s captain for the duration of the forthcoming Metro Bank One-Day Cup, which begins against Surrey at Sedbergh School next Tuesday, and the emerging all-rounder says he is “super excited” to get going.

Balderson, 25, may be new to the competitive first-team captaincy lark, but he’s gained plenty of leadership experience down the years, be it in the Cheshire age-groups or with the England Under 19s.

A precursor to this appointment came in 2023 and 2024 when he skippered Lancashire in two National Counties Showcase games against Cumbria. On Tuesday, he will be familiar with the 10.30am walk to the middle given both of those games were at Sedbergh.

Balderson has been chosen ahead of T20 captain Keaton Jennings, who isn’t on a Hundred deal this summer and is available to bolster Lancashire’s One-Day Cup squad. He’s also been favoured ahead of club vice captain Josh Bohannon, who has been excellent with the bat in recent seasons in 50-over cricket.
