Chris Read believes the overseas signing of Australian batting superstar Meg Lanning for this summer’s Vitality Blast T20 campaign is a great thing for the development of the county game and not just for Lancashire.
With the Red Rose having won last year’s Vitality County T20 Cup and the Metro Bank One-Day Cup, Blast glory is almost the missing piece in the jigsaw. And, with the signing of Lanning, the intentions are clear.
However, you can talk about the 33-year-old’s arrival in a wider context, with it following hot on the heels of Ellyse Perry playing for Hampshire through the heart of last season and Alana King also representing Lancashire.
The women’s county game is still developing and growing, and players of their standing featuring has to help in that sense, with Lanning still at the top of her game following a shock early retirement from international cricket in November 2023.
