“Over the years countless cricketers have said how lucky we are to play on so many lovely grounds amid such pleasant countryside. Unsophisticated grounds too, but not primitive; most importantly, we have been able to play more amongst trees than concrete stands and soulless terraces.”
Colin Cowdrey
We are about to enter the months of tents and waving colours; that period at the heart of the season when some first-class counties, whether through need or desire, take matches away from their headquarters to grounds which are normally used for club or school games.
There used to be many more; time was when Yorkshire, Kent and Essex’s teams were virtually peripatetic. I’d like to have watched cricket in that era but I’m grateful that I’ll soon be at Blackpool, York and Chesterfield; Rugby, Repton and Farington; Scarborough, Arundel and Sedbergh. Perhaps others, too.
