It was one of those occasions when it was fine for people to be satisfied with themselves – and what they had achieved. One of those occasions when being pleased with yourself didn’t carry connotations of smugness or ignorance.

On Thursday just gone, the newly named AO Farington Cricket Ground was officially opened.

Inside the brand-new pavilion, officials from Emirates Old Trafford, board members, county councillors, sponsors, architects, builders, an MP and even the odd cricketer applauded the occasion, admired the facilities, tucked into the cupcakes and coffee and did their best to keep out of the heat.

The name of the new sponsors had only been announced that morning. Lancashire have gone from “Ay up” to AO in one handshake, a bit of dosh and a couple of signatures. No doubt it will help. Those who decry sponsorship might think about the stuff it pays for.
