Instead of “Good morning, Paul,” which was Chris Rimmer’s usual greeting around 9.30, I’ve had to get used to “Nah then, mucker!” And “mucker” is by far the politest, least colloquial, epithet Garry has deployed so far.

Imagine, if you will, a male scorer for a county cricket team on the first morning of a four-day game. How is he dressed? Jacket and tie, the latter probably crested? Quite so.

Now meet Garry Morgan, Lancashire’s notcher, who usually rocks up in a black track-suit and baseball cap, the latter invariably reversed.

And rejoice.

Ah, but remember the saying about appearances, you might protest. Well, yes, but they’re not deceptive in Garry’s case.
