David Makinson: A love affair with Leyland, Lancashire and the game of cricket

A shoulder injury may have not long ago put paid to David Makinson’s storied playing career, be it with Eccleston, Leyland, Leyland Motors, Cumberland, Lancashire and even the county’s over 60s side. But he remains steadfastly close to the game of cricket.
Keen to chat to the all-rounder who represented the Red Rose for five seasons between 1984 and 1988, we sent a text message to tee something up around 10 o’clock one morning a fews weeks ago.
“That’s fine. I might be on the roller, but I’ll keep checking my phone”, came the reply.
The roller in question was down at Fox Lane, the home of Leyland Cricket Club, where he has held strong links since 1978 and now coaches and is on the committee.
