Ben Walkden is proof that the dream is always alive even if the path isn’t always straightforwards, the all-rounder from Newton-le-Willows making his Lancashire debut against Northamptonshire this weekend.
Walkden, 23, signed professional terms with the Red Rose during the recent Metro Bank One-Day Cup campaign, was in a couple of squads but didn’t play as the county were beaten in the quarter-finals. However, coach Steven Croft has given him a chance against the red-ball as Lancashire bid to find late-season momentum for a last-gasp promotion bid.
Walkden bowled three overs during a rain-affected opening day at Emirates Old Trafford yesterday, removing Calvin Harrison well caught at mid-off by Josh Bohannon during a three-over burst which would have been more but for rain. Northamptonshire finished on 56-2.
