History

Oh so nearly in 2007 - Lancashire's monumental final-day fight at The Oval falls just short

You didn’t need to be born or raised in Lancashire to hope Chilly’s men could do it. Having once changed trains at Clitheroe was enough.

During the first lockdown, I was commissioned by Cricinfo to produce two series of articles. The first, Odd Men In, concerned players, most of whom were unusual in some respect and about whom I had always wanted to write. The second, Matches from the Day, focused on memorable days in a county’s history. With the express permission of Cricinfo’s current UK editor, Andrew Miller, we are able to present revised versions of a few of those pieces on Lanky Lanky. Many thanks, Andrew.

As I suggest when introducing my Odd Men In essays, you might think it is something of a cheek to reissue pieces that have already appeared on a world-class website and can also be read in my book, Summer Days Promise. My defence is that I’ll be writing heaps of fresh stuff for this site and that I reckon Lanky Lanky is a suitable final resting place for this memoir of the final four days of the 2007 Championship season. Readers might remember them and I think of that match with tremendous fondness. Whatever the hard nuts say, failure really can be heroic
