Geoff Edrich - A players' player to his marrow

Unless you read the match reports and listen to the testimony of team-mates, it is easy to overlook the widely-held belief that Edrich was one of Lancashire’s bravest batsmen, or the persuasive argument that had he been skipper throughout 1956, the county’s wait for an outright Championship win would have lasted a mere 22 years instead of 77.

Over a decade ago, I was asked by The Cricket Paper to write about some of the best county sides in the game’s history.

It was a lovely assignment and I did my best with it.

There was particular pleasure gained from writing about Lancashire’s team in the 1950s, when they finished runners-up to Surrey in the County Championship and might have won it.

But I doubt many copies of that paper are around now, so I was delighted when Matt Thacker, the current publisher of TCP, agreed to let me use pieces from that series on CounterPress sites.
